Understand the concept
A dashboard is only as trustworthy as its relationship to the underlying source data. A visualization tool that maintains its own separate copy or its own separate calculation of a figure — even innocently, through a scheduled export — creates exactly the drift problem programmes most need to avoid: the dashboard says one number, the report says another, for the identical period, and nobody can say with confidence which is right.
The most useful dashboard design principle is restraint: surfacing the small number of things that genuinely need attention (a lagging indicator, an overdue activity, a district falling behind) rather than every number the system holds. A wall of charts nobody reads is not analysis, it is decoration.
